Just rereading The Dead Zone, and started to wonder whether Greg Stillson is a (non to subtle) dig at Thompson?
Both Stillson and Hunter went for the 'freak' vote and employed ex bikers etc...
Also the time the book is set is round about the time (well a bit later) Thompson was running (as in Campaign Trail)
I did a quick google search but nothing seemed to pop up.
Was Stephen King a little afraid of the freak vote?
on page 413 (isbn 0-7515-0432-7)
it mentions what what happened to Thompson while investigating the Hells Angels - so I guess my idea was probably wrong, as there is certainly no bitterness or anything.
I'd still like to hear what others think. Much of the book was set after it was written, so I was wondering if it was King extrapolating forward what might have happened had Thompson got in.

I didn't see that when I read the book nor, did I see that when I saw the movie. Greg Stillson was a very dangerous man. He was going to "push the button" which would start a world war. He had to be stopped. That's what I got from the book.
I doubt that Stephen King is afraid of anything except his own imagination.
