It is widely acknowledge that the last hundred or so years, since the collapse of the Ottoman empire, has seen Islam enter its darkest period in history, where we as a people have stagnated.
Why are muslim countries ruled by autocrats, and dictators, who are secularists rather than muslim.
Did you know that in the Arab city of Cordoba, there were two miles of public lighting in the streets when London was still a village!
Obviously, colonialism took its toll. 90% of the muslim world lived under colonial rule, which explains muslim distrust of the western world still to this day. But even this can no longer, or should no longer be an excuse.
So is the solution therefore, an Islamic democracy, where people are not subjugated and oppressed by the dictators, where people and trade can once again flourish. Our Islamic values and culture, which are threatened by the secular, materialistic culture of the West, can and SHOULD be maintained. So what's stopping this democratic reform of muslim countries?
This is the trade off that needs to be made. From what i can gather, most muslims don't want western democracy, but a different kind of democracy which is also found within islam itself, i.e. the concept of shura.
So what can be done to bring about this change that is needed?
Thanks C for giving a lengthy answer. Unfortunately, some people on here have showed themselves to have brains the size of their balls.
Is you don't understand islamic culture, have a profound lack of knowledge on islamic history, and have nothing kind to say, then why take the trouble to answer the question? An ego trip i fear.
BTW, democracy and Islam can co-exist. Look up the concept of 'shura'.
Also, democracies are NEVER perfect, or static. America, for example, is always striving for "a more perfect Union". Different countries have different levels of progress of their democracy, and as to how it fits with their culture, history, and tradition. British democracy is very different to Malaysian democracy for example. Diff places, diff type of democracy.
