The Conflicts Between The United States and The Soviet Union
During the time period 1945-1989, there were conflicts between the United States and the Soviet Union, since they had differences in their ways in government beliefs, the two countries then fell apart, and turned into a struggle known as the Cold War.
There were many views on why the United States assumes global responsibility for containing communism. Reasons being that since the United States did not want any more spreading of communism, because it would probably lead to more war, or threats from the Soviet Union. So in order for it not to get out of hand, the United States made sure to send out certain plans to make sure the spreading would be contained in Europe.
The western allies saw the Soviet take over Eastern Europe as brutal aggression. For example the Soviet took over east Germany, Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. The Soviets did not have justification for their actions, due to the fact that Eastern Europe wanted to take care of their own actions, laws, economy, etc. For instance in east Germany they tried to lengthen the work day without paying more money, or also in Hungary and Czechoslovakia, these countries were forced to conform to the Soviet model. Just to go into one's country and try to change everything around, is not justified at all.
Americans fear of communism during the 1950’s was justified in a way, but not very fairly in some cases. Since the fear was growing, a Red Scare swept the country. Congress had then taken matters into their own hanRAB by setting up panels to investigate suspected communists. The hearings that were settled had put well-known writers jailed, or careers ruined.
Joseph McCarthy led the Senate Committee, putting charged Communist conspiracists before the committee to defend themselves. He would do this and never proved a single case showing the accusations charged.
These accusations seem very wrong. What congress was doing was not exactly fair. Not being able to prove the communists' actions, and being jailed, does not exactly seem appropriate.
There are various reasons to explain why the Cold War affected politics in Western European countries. It affected some countries in a good way. For example Germany, a country that was almost entirely destroyed, boosted right back up coming to be one of the world’s most stabled democracies. Great Britain was also having a good effect off the Cold War. Britain’s government provided certain programs to help the well being of their people, offering social security and free education.
The Cold War seemed to have its good effects in Western European countries in all but France. France was still struggling because of the existence of many political parties torn away hoping for a stable government. For all in one, France was successful economically.
The east- west split effected many world affairs during the next 40 years. To cite an instance, the Cuban Missile Crisis, which was the Soviet’s trying to shoot off nuclear missiles into Cuba. Luckily the United States blockaded Cuba to stop this process from happening. This had a major effect on world affairs because Cuba met with stiff American clash. This also gave Cuba the chance for America to have an agreement never to attack Cuba. The Soviets relationship with China had soured also as a result. Luckily if the United States had not stepped in, then the world would be on the brim of a nuclear war.
Another example to the effect of the split of east-west was the Berlin Wall. This was a wall that separated east and west Berlin, keeping the very intelligent on one side. This became a syrabol of the Cold War, and the battle between democracy and communism in the world.
Effects to this wall had not only been the syrabol to the Cold War, but for nearly a half a century after the end of World War II, the world’s two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, dominated the world. In 1989 though, the wall was torn down, and as an effect, a year later the Soviet crurabled, and the Cold War came to an end.
In conclusion, we see how the conflicts between the United States and the Soviet Union fell apart and went through their struggles, through what we know as the Cold War.
