After the coolant light came on did you add more coolant? If not, you need to. If you did in fact put more coolant in and the light is back on, then you have a leak somewhere (if the sensor isn't broken). The best way to check is to add coolant, go for a drive, and then park your car. Wait a few minutes and look under the car; if there is a greenish liquid dripping, then you have a coolant leak. It could be the radiator, the water pump, or it could be a leak from a hose.
If you do not know about cars, then you most likely will not be able to fix it yourself. If it is just a hose or the radiator, you might be able to fix it yourself if you get some advice, but the water pump is a very tough job and takes hours to replace.
Good luck!
