Contract is only worth the ETF. So $175 or $200. It really isn't much compared to carriers around the world.
Much different than where you are getting a very good phone for free from say t-mobile Uk, but once you sign that contract, you're ****ed. You have to pay out that whole contract.
I think we have much better deals here also. I will pick t-mobile USA and buy an unlocked phone any day over REALLY being in a "contract", and having very expensive plans.

When I switched from Verizon to Cingular I was told I couldn't get just the sim card with a 1 or 2 year contract so I took the cheapest GSM phone they offered on a 1 year contract. After the paperwork was signed and received the phone, I took the sim card out and placed it in my Samsung D600 in the Cingular store. The look on the sales agents faces was a sight to see, they asked why I didn't opt for a better phone. I told them that the phone I had was unlocked, unbranded, and better than anything they were offering.

This really bothers me - even if you have your own hardware, you still have to sign up for a contract.
I really hate the contract lock in stuff. It's the only thing keeping me from jumping on the N75.
As for those in Europe saying the N75 is crappy, well... it's all relative. To this day, the N75 is still the *only* provider-subsidized 3G S60 phone available in the states. At least we have unlimited data here for $20 (~ ?13) per month, which I believe is a pretty good deal.
