Well personally I think "The Birds" is Hitchcock's worst movie, so I don't care if they remake it. There are interesting scenes and excitement. But other than that is is a giant bore fest and completely pointless.

Rear Window and North by Northwest are far superior. :D

Yes, he followed the blueprint, but as Gus himself stated, he wanted to clone the original movie, it was not a remake, more of a philological study on it.

Hence the "not directing"... He just followed the blueprint. I do have the "Psycho Remake" on DVD for Viggo Mortensen. I'm pathetic.

IMO, Gus Van Sant did a very good job in CLONING the original Psycho...it was his goal, wasn't it? I just think he succeeded. But I'm totally against a BIRDS remake..they made a BIRDS 2, if I remember right, and it was a HORRIBLE movie...however, they could make a film based on Daphne du Maurier's story, but please NOT a remake...

for a new generation the same old idea for a "new" film, just remade.....what goes around comes around....in the 60's my mother called it karma.....in the new millenium i call it getting what you deserve.....

just say no to remakes............

No one ever said Hollywood was original.

You have to remember what Hollywood is. It is a business. More importantly, it is a risk averse business.

Hollywood is an industry built on reputation. "You're only as good as your last film". Ergo, with the stakes being so high... Millions of dollars per film... The people who actually drive this industry... The studio execs and not the artistic persons like directors, screenwriters, actors etc... Are going to want to make sure they are going to get a sizeable return on their (the studio and investor) investment. That's just good business sense. Forget artistic sensibilities.

This is why Hollywood is obsessed with remakes and comic book movies. They are guranteed hits, more or less. Especially, the remake since it supposedly did well when it was released originally, ergo, an updated version should do just as well according to their logic.

And like you, I am not a purist in I think some remakes are better than the originals... But that may be because of my/our contemporary culture bias I/we have just from being born when we were born as well.

Also, the other big factor is that studio execs think in terms of marketing to one demographic and one demopgrahic only: 14 year old males.

This is another reason comic book movies are so popular (even if there are good ones out there like X-Men and Spider Man).

This is the core of how marketing decisions are made, what films are going to be greenlighted, who is going to be cast in the film, etc, etc. Hollywood loves to claim that they want a wide audience... Which is true in some respects... But deep down, they cater to the 14 year old male with a lot of disposable income who cannot only go see the movie, but buy the video game, the soundtrack, buy the DVD once it is out and other tie-ins moreso than the 25-45+ year olds who just see a movie once and that's it.

The Birds fits into this category because they can potentially knock the rating down to a PG-13 "for intense animal violence" (or something) and get all these teen boys into it who've never even seen the original and have no desire to. Cast someone like Jessica Alba, or Jessica Biel in the Tippi Hedron role and its instant teenage boy appeal.

Face it: Hollywood is about making money and catering to the youth market.

While this isn't new... It has never been to the point where it is now where adults (25+) just do not factor into the movies being made and this is partly why there is a lot of crap out there that doesn't appeal to adults and why a lot of adults don't go to the movies (coupled with the high price of tickets and concessions) anymore and why downloading films off the net is taking place of the theater going experience for a lot of movie fans.

Universal is planning on remaking Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 horror classic The Birds with Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes in talks to produce with Peter Guber through his Mandalay Pictures banner.

The Hollywood Reporter says the new version would be based on the short story by Daphne Du Maurier, to which Universal owns the rights and which inspired Hitchcock's movie. Tippi Hedren starred in the original thriller about increasingly vicious birds that terrorize a small town.

Universal has previously remade Hitchcock's Psycho with director Gus Van Sant in 1998. A Strangers on a Train redo is also in the works at Warner Bros. Pictures, which released A Perfect Murder - based on the play that inspired Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder - in 1998.

Platinum Dunes has released succesful remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Amityville Horror, and is working on a new version of The Hitcher.

I know that this is 'news' but I really think it should be open to discussion (but move or close if you don't agree :) )

My first reaction to this news is 'for gods sake why?' Has Hollywood run out of ideas so much to be thinking of remaking one of the best films ever? How can you top Hitchcock? I don't think you can. I know this film is dated and people nowadays are used to see much worse on screen, but it still creeps me out. Even though I've seen it many times and know what happens around every corner, it still scares me. There isn't a film maker today who has the same talent as Hitchcock to pour freezing cold water down ones spine. (See Rear Window when the murderer looks up and see's Jimmy Stewart looking at him through the camera lens..the scariest moment in film, at least for me) He does so much with so little.
It seems Hollywood is only interested in remakes and comic strips at the moment. Don't get me wrong I love Spiderman and X-men and look forward to Singers Superman and I've never been a purist, I think some remakes are better than the original. The second 'A Star is Born' is my favorite and I'm still waiting for a good version of 'The Woman In White' to finally do justice to one of my favorite characters, Marian Halcombe. I know that remakes can make a lot of money but does this mean its OK to do so?
I also would put 'The Birds' in a different catagory to Amityville (which was good) and 'The Hitcher' (which was even better) .

I don't know, I don't want to come across as an old fart who dosen't like change. I do say bring on the new..it's just that, IMO, there are just some films you can't remake...Chaplins 'The Kid' for example?
