The bike in pokemon crystal is too expensive!! Please Help?

I went to the bike store in goldenrod but the guy there keeps saying that a bike is 1,000,000. Everyone says he gives you one for free. I haven't got the 3rd gym badge yet (the plain badge). Is that it or is something wrong with my game. Please help me!
(will i need to go to a place where i need my bike, if not, i'll live)
also, in the daycare south of golden rod, he won't give me an odd egg
sorry for the two questions, but i need help!!
