The Best of Peter Sellers

Anyone else think that Seller's best work was in small British films like The Wrong Arm of the Law on Channel 4 this afternoon.
Apart from one or two of the Panther films , his films were pretty dire post Strangelove.
Give me Two Way Stretch and those little gems any day.

I'm facinated with how it went wrong for Sellers, so I am very interested in those later films. I really like Being There and even though it was just a cameo, A Day at The Beach. Hoffman has its merits too, despite the bad ending.

I must confess to not really liking his earlier films as they are a bit too twee for my taste.

Agreed. The lure of Hollywood didn't do his style of comedy any favours. They were twee but had charm, which the later ones lacked, including a certain Panther.

I feel cheated that he did not do more "acting/black comedy" roles like Strangelove.
It is just such an amazing film and his preformance is sublime.
Stand it next to There's a Girl in my Soup.

The worst Sellers film from the lost years has to be Where does it Hurt?/ Soft beRAB, Hard Battles.

If I remember it right he was originally picked to play even more roles, with Slim Pickens' Major King Kong being a late change due to ill-health. He would have been good sitting on the bomb.

Yeah, I read this. He got a hooky doctor to slap his leg in a cast, because he could not get the accent quite right.

I really think Lolita is an amazing film too, Sellers is good, but Mason.....WOW!

A Shot In The Dark was the best of the Pink Panther films - written by William Peter Blatty who then wrote the novel The Exorcist.
He was great in Dr Strangelove and Lolitta, both excellent Kubric films.
He was also great in all of his Boulting Brothers films, especially I'm All right Jack and Heavens Above.
I also love him in What's New Pussycat (written by Woody Allen).
And of course, Being There is excellent.
A pity that in his later films he was tended to be typecast in his "goony" roles
