The Bad Lieutenant - with Nicholas Cage

Yes it is. I saw the original version with Harvey Keitel some time ago, but this one is completely different.
I don't want to say too much, only that I highly recommend it and Nicholas Cage is brilliant.

I've seen it on bluray which came out in the states a while back.

Quite enjoyed it, some funny scenes and a decent performance by Cage. A bit mad/far fetched in parts so you have to go with the flow.

That's a tricky question. By everyone else's standarRAB, probably yes. But Herzog himself claims it is in no way a remake, as he hasn't seen the original, and he gets quite cross when people say it is.

I'm in two minRAB. I like Herzog, but I hate Cage. On the other hand, I thought the Ferrara original was a piece of shit, so if this is being in no way true to the source material, it might be good.

It's not a remake.

Would not really call it a 're imagining' either.

It takes place in a completely different city, has a different character, no relation to the original story and takes place in the present day.

The only real connection is the central character being somewhat unhinged, reliant on drugs and abusing his authority...and the title.

That said, I thoroughly enjoyed it...it's edgy, compelling stuff. Cage is phenomenal in the title role, the sort of role he was born to play. It dispenses with the religious allegoey and angst of the original, but it creates it's own universe that is often just as weird, provocative and just plain out-there as the original.

Saw it yesterday. Absolutely loved it! It has been a long time since I've seen something so quirky and satisfying. Cage is insane, and there are some absolutely hilarious moments. I would be surprised if he wasn't nominated in the next Oscars. Herzog is a genius!
