In order to fund those kind of development programs, the manufacturers still have to be able to SELL what they currently make. The economy sucks, and people are hardly buying any cars, let alone new technology ones with much higher price tags. I'm all about new forms of energy for cars, but the timing is not on anyone's side right now.
