THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN! The title to Spider-man II had been rumored earlier this week but was confirmed in an article announcing the film's new writer.

It seems Columbia has hired a Pulitzer Prize-winner to rewrite the existing script. Michael Chabon won the Pulitzer for his "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay" about two Jewish New Yorkers who create superheroes and villains based on their own dreams and fears.

Chabon at one time was considered to write the draft for the original X-MEN although he was never actually commissioned to submit a script.

The Amazing Spider-man is scheduled to go before cameras in January with a May 7, 2004 release date. So far Dr. Octopus and the Black Cat are confirmed to appear in the film.

Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will return .

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette talked with Michael Chabon, writer of The Amazing Spider-Man (Spider-man 2) and he mentioned that he will not be working off of any of David Koepp, Miles Millar & Al Gough's previous drafts of the sequel...

While staying in the background with his daughter while his wife talked about her books yesterday, Chabon was reluctant to discuss the big news in his own career -- he signed on to write the screenplay for the next "Spider-Man" movie.

"I'm really sworn to secrecy about it," he said, but he did reveal that he was brought in after several drafts were not accepted.

"I haven't read any of them. I'm doing my own, which I'm really very thrilled about. It's very exciting to be given the chance to work on "Spider-Man."

Chabon is a comic book aficionado, as evidenced by his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay," a tale of two cousins who create a Superman-like hero in the 1930s.
