The All New Tips and Tricks Thread!

Ok, so I started one of these a while ago, which led to the creation of the Wiki. But the wiki has been so hosed over, and I really don't feel like cleaning it up, that I'm just going to start another tips and tricks thread... this time with all new S60v3 Goodies!

So lay 'em down, what are your tips for managing your phone, all you symbian guru's?

Couple of my own that I've developed/used a lot:

*Keep a copy of all .sis on your memory card. I have a folder I've created called "Sis". Even if I install the program in some other way (like emailing it, or via bluetooth), I save a copy of the actual installer in that folder. In the future, if for some reason a proggy gets corrupted, I can do an install locally, without having to wait til I'm near a computer, or d/l it through Opera or something.

*Install themes to phone memory, not memory card. An oldie but goodie here, but one I think not a lot of people are aware of. Yes, I know you are limited on phone memory, and on phones like the 668x series especially this becomes a problem, but in general, you are better off with a theme on your phone memory. Why? Because the more often that a phone has to access the memory card, the more chances the card has for corrupting. When it accesses a program on the memory card, in general it loads it into Ram and then is done with it... but with a Theme, it's constantly re-accessing the card, which can cause problems. The real kicker is that your phone will perform moving around the UI better if it's installed locally, rather than on the card.

*Similar to above, keep sms local if it all possible (unless you simply get/save too many). When sms are set to save to card directly, you are much more likely to have card corruption problems (this was especially evident on the 6630, and is made worse when using a stock nokia DV RS-MMC).

One caveat with installing a theme on phone memory is "what if the theme itself gets corrupt?"

I once had an instance where I (accidentally) installed an E61 theme on my memory card. I activated the theme, and all seemed fine, that is, until I rebooted my phone the next morning. The phone would get to the standby screen and then restart itself, over and over again. I finally got it to start with the default theme by removing the memory card before starting the phone back up.

Your results may vary.

Intall the theme(s) to phone memory only after you "thoroughly" tested the theme on the memory card. If the theme is buggy & installed on the phone memory then you will end up with annoying issues & getting outa phone memory is a pain.

Great idea guys.. Finally browsing and typing on my e70-2..my dream has come true..

ill have to try out sum tips and im basically just getting use to the keyboard..

thanks 4 the help and keep the tips comming

PS: Why does it say my msg was posted wirelessly?

I downloaded some themes from s60 and saved them in my card. I tried to move them and didnt have the option to do so..well see what happens, its only the stock (128) card anyway. I still have to pick up my 1gb.

Single greatest piece of advice I've ever heard for a S60
I typically would keep my sis files on my memory card but soon delete them as they annoyed me when I had to scroll through them to get to certain things.....gee...create a folder for them
Thanks Olly!

Well its actually not giving me the option of deleting it either.

Yet another Pain the A with V3's. If the theme does not appear in your app manager then you need to connect your phone to your CPU in Mass storage mode and enable "show hidden folders" in your Tools/folder options/view...from there you go to the hidden folder and search through a bunch of folders until you find your themes. You have to open many of them to see whats inside as they will be given a generic name. Example: 1909809499, something like that. One annoying thing I've noticed is the fact that many of the themes I've created I must re-create if I've deleted them in this manner. I think there are some residual files left over and when I try and re-install them it gives me an error and says unable to install. I've noticed this mainly from themes I've created at ownskin.com. It's a pain but at least you can remove unwanted themes. Hope this helps!

Good point with the saving messages on the memory card. I find that it also takes longer to open the messaging app to read or write simple sms when it's set to save on a 1gb miniSD.
The advantage to saving to the memory card is that if you switch phones alot your email settings and messages will carry over. Ie. N73 to E70-2, etc

You can go back and forth

For example, just before changing phones, set your phone to use the MemoryCard for the messaging stuff, I don't on newer phones but on my ancient 3650 when you do this, it will ask if you want to save the original messages, you can answer NO, this time the messages are moved from the phone to the Card and Deleted from the phone, switch the phones and in the other phone do the same, set it to use the Phone memory, it will mopve the stuff from teh card to the phone memory and delete it from the card.

repat the process every time you are going to switch phones, BTW, this is a problem if your messaging stuff is bigger than yhe available phone memory...

just my .2 cuban pesos
