The 250 greatest cartoon series, or something like that

I should've figured The Simpsons would be #1. Also some of the listings, like Daffy Duck or Porky Pig, seem to list characters, not series. And they also list Scooby Doo, which is very broad, because there's over a dozen series revolving around the character. Which one do they mean?
 
I think they've got characters on the list because, with theatrical shorts, the characters generally were the series. Seems pretty common on these lists, actually, although I think making a single Looney Tunes entry would've made more sense than splitting it up into its component parts.

As for Scooby-Doo (and the superhero cartoons), my guess is that they mean each entry to cover the entire franchise.

I'm not sure what to make of this, really. I could give them Scooby Doo and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers, even though I'm not a huge fan of any of those shows, because I understand why some people like them, but... Dragon Tales? Maggie & the Ferocious Beast? Franklin? :confused:

EDIT: Oh lordy, Rocket Power!!!? There are no excuses.
 
Explanations or not, this is the best list I've ever seen. In my opinion, just about all of the cartoons are ranked very accurately and I can't find any exceptions. I'm also glad to see the Disney shorts get the recognition that they deserve. They are usually absent from these lists due to not being an actual animated series.
 
I am glad to see that Ed Edd n Eddy is there. It's usually missing from these kinds of lists. I am surprised that Atomic Betty, Catdog, Wild Thornberries, KaBlam!, Bob the Builder, and Dora the Explorer were there. They don't seem like something that would be in greast cartoons list (no offense to anyone that likes them).
 
The list is interesting, but I would have liked to see a fuller explaination of their choices - may even a blurb for each series. It was nice to see cartoons like Men in Black: The Series (161) and Histeria! (178) make the list. (I always thought the latter was under-rated.) I assume that "Ghostbusters" (215) refers to The Real Ghostbusters, but they should have noted which series they meant (as there is also the Filmation series to consider).
 
Where the hell is Foster's? Seriously?

Don't care for these types of list either way, but that seemed like a major omission. They listed just about every popular and well-liked cartoon ever made except that one...
 
So, cartoons targeted towards younger audiences don't count?

When doing lists like this, you have to look past the demographic. I would personally put two of those in my top 15 series of all-time, maybe even top 10.
 
Well, that sort of depends... I'd definitley have Arthur on a top 250 list, and probably a few other "aimed at children" cartoons as well (Jane & the Dragon and Wordgirl hop readily to mind), because they're made to appeal to several different demographics at once, but when you've got a show made for a childs mentality, than yeah, I'd say it's a bit odd.

I've found a clue as to how this list was put together.

I noticed a few British series on the list, which stuck out since these things generally keep to American and Japanese stuff. Then I realised that they're pretty much the same selection of UK cartoons that turned up on Channel 4's top 100:

Channel 4's list has Charley Says, Jamie and the Magic Torch, Roobarb, Noggin the Nog, Willo the Wisp, Captain Pugwash, 2DTV, Bod, Ivor the Engine, Danger Mouse and Wallace and Gromit. This list has all of those plus Bob the Builder, Duckula, Rupert and something called Thomas the Train (which I'm guessing is Thomas the Tank Engine), and at least three of those four aired in America.

Makes me wonder if the whole thing's compiled from several different lists.
 
Dragon Tales and Franklin. The earliest seasons of each show have some quality stories and animation, if you're willing to look past the target age groups.
 
Really, I have to say this list is horrifically bad.

They dont even seem to list series within specific genres in an accurate order.

I mean, for goodness sakes, SPEED RACER is ABOVE GUNDAM.

They also just don't make an effort to give accurate titles. Jem and the Holograms for instance, they simply called "Jem" and He-Man they don't offer any explanation which version it is.

This list is worth a summary glance at best maybe for how bad it's put together.
 
Why not? I know Gundam is very popular, but from an American pop culture standpoint Speed Racer is a lot more well known among mainstream audiences.
 
I know how you feel, I feel the same way about Pokemon being over Digimon, Digimon is a way better series, but I understand popularity and mainstream success plays a part.

Personally I think Sailor Moon should be the number one anime on the list. But we all have our opinions.
 
Any list with that many entries that doesn't have Fillmore! on it is completely stupid imo. I'd look at the list myself but... well i dunno. These links usually take some time to load on my connection and besides. Anyway i tell you anyone who doesn't like Fillmore! must be stupid imo. IMO cCatdog is a good show to the poster who mentioned it a as a bad show above somewhere.
 
That list is confusing. Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny and Goofy are characters, not shows, and Schoolhouse Rock! isn't even a show, it's a series of educational shorts that ran as filler segments between programs. And number 197 is "Charlie Says..."? Are they talking about Choo-Choo Charlie from Good 'N' Plenty? Because that's a commercial. That list is a tad...off, to say the least.
