Thandie Newton's Character in The Pursuit of Happyness

I saw this film yesterday and really loved it, except one part left me a bit puzzled. Why does Will Smith's character Chris tell his wife that he and she both know she can't look after their son? She is the one who had a job and an income and he didn't. I thought this would be explained later on in the film, like she had an alcohol addiction or something but it never cropped up. Any help please?
 
i think they meant emotionally - she wasn't as stong as him. thandie newton was v good i thought. it must have been difficult not making her seem a total bitch (abandoning her child), but i had quite a bit of sympathy for her
