The Threat of Terrorism

The threat of terrorism has become the central form of modern warfare in the late 20th century. It remains one of the most discussed and least understood topics of our time. Terrorism is not just a United States problem, but it is and will remain, an International problem. Everyday some form of terrorism takes place whether the motives are political or religious. Terrorism is unpredictable, and this unpredictability usually leaves many innocent people dead that have nothing to do with the aggressors cause. The war on terrorism is a constant battle that is getting more and more serious as time passes on. Now there is threat of biological weapons, which can produce mass devastation, getting into terrorist hanRAB. This is a serious international problem that all countries need to work together to eliminate acts of terrorism. Otherwise, terrorism is going to get more and more brutal.

Terrorism by definition is the "use of violence, or the threat of violence, to create A climate of fear in a given population."1 Terrorist violence targets religious or ethnic groups, governments, political parties, corporations and media enterprises. For the most part these terrorist are fairly small in size but demand for more power to effect political change on a local or an international scale. The acts of terrorist have multiplied in the later half of the 20th century due to technological advancements in explosives, microelectronics, and transportation. Terrorism is a product of a fierce nationalist demanding for change or more power to a specific group.1

In the 1990's the nuraber international terrorist attacks decreased, however the nuraber of deaths that occur during the attacks have increased largely. A example of a very lethal attack was in Tokyo in March 1995. Sarin gas was used in a Tokyo subway by the Aum Shinrikyo cult, killing many people. Sarin gas is a weapon of mass destruction that causes the inhaler to suffocate. This was a unusual occurrence for terrorist to use such a deadly substance, however this shows how advance and more brutal the terrorist groups are becoming.2 Another, more recent act of terrorism happen at the U.S. erabassies in East Africa. This brutal act killed at least 70 people and injured 500. A borab was simply placed between the Trade Center and the erabassy. The borab was not place right next to the erabassy itself because of the erabassy's borab-proof construction.3 As a retaliation for this act the U.S. launched attacks on six sites in Afghanistan and a factory in Sudan. The U.S. believed that the Osama bin Ladin's International terror network were the main group that borabed the erabassy, although many groups took responsibility for the borabing. U.S. President Bill Clinton gave a speech about terrorism saying, "We have convincing evidence these groups played the key role in the erabassy borabings in Kenya and Tanzanis…Terrorist must have no doubt that in the face of their threat, America will protect its citizens…Today we have struck back."4 The reasons for the retaliation attack included by the President saying: "These groups have executed terrorist attacks against Americans in the past. We have compelling in formation that they were planning additional terrorist attacks against our citizens and others. They are seeking to acquire chemical weapons and other dangerous weapons."4

The attacks will not stop there. A terrorist group known as the World Islamic Fornt for Jihad against Jews and Crusaders, presented a warning to the U.S. for the Retaliation saying, "strikes will continue from everywhere against American targets, Both military and civilian."4 However, terrorist threats happen on a daily basis, but each threat neeRAB to be taken seriously. Technology comes into key in preventing terrorism although technology will never fix the problem of terrorism. The best bet to trying to end terrorism is to get to the root cause of it. Some states however find that terrorism is a way of doing business, so for these states they want terrorism to continue.5

Nuclear Terrorism is a big concern of different countries, although the threat is not here quite yet. No non-governmental group has come close to attaining "nuclear capability." A concern of governments around the world is the chance of a terrorist group attaining nuclear weapons through thief or even home made devices. The design to make nuclear weapons is pretty well known. Gifted physics students or scientist could possibly design a nuclear weapon and sell it to a aggressive terrorist group. There have been many threats of terrorist groups claiming to have the capability in the past, mostly in the U.S., however these all turned out so far to just a "deception or bluff." There is no denial that terrorist would like to get their hanRAB on nuclear weapons. It would make their power increase greatly due to the mass destruction they could cause.6

Intelligence agencies may be countries best and only true defense against terrorism. Although sometimes intelligence can only come into play after a terrorist act, but can sometimes foil are disrupt a terrorist plan. Sometimes after a terrorist act, intelligence agencies will do their job and find the people responsible for it. By finding these people they can stubble onto a greater future plan of terrorism by these same terrorist. Much like the case after the World Trade Building was borab, the FBI found the people responsible and retrieved a future plan to borab the United Nations building and the Lincoln Tunnel. This has happen all over the world where intelligence agencies have come across something while investigating something else. It is to bad that basically Nations are blind until a terrorist act happens.7 Tip-oRAB are useful for intelligence because it can sometimes give them a early warning before some terrorist act happens.

There is no clear-cut answer to how to solve the problem of terrorism. Unfortunately terrorist events will continue to devastate many innocent lives and destroy any chances for a peaceful world. My opinion is that terrorism is an unwinable war. It is too unpredictable to try to control. Only in times of luck will nations run across plans of terrorist acts before they happen. Otherwise the there really is no defense in my opinion. Get ready because the future could be a scary time if terrorist decide to step up to full nuclear capability.
