Texting girls in high school...?

I'm a junior in high school. I have never had a girlfriend or my first kiss yet. I sometimes feel different that everyone. I'm a pretty shy guy and have trouble starting conersations with girls cause i don't know how to start it without akwardness. If a girl talks to me first, then i don't have a problem. I barely text girls either cause idk what to say. I'm afraid the girl wouldnt want totalk to me or she would think itwould be akward if i tried to talk to her all of the sudden randomly. So i was wondering if girls wait for guys to start conversations and thats why i don't text girls a lot? Or is it something else... Like my looks or something? I don't think its my personality cause i've been told i had a great personality. I'm athletic, i'm a listener, i have a good sense of humor and i love to laugh, i'm pretty smart like a 3.3 gpa. Is it just cause i'm shy or is it other reasons why girls don't text me? How can i start a conversation without it being akward.
