Tethering on UMA - NOT!

I just spent the day yesterday between TMO level 3 tech support and my BES provider, trying to figure out why my tethering with my Curve 8320 would not work.

Finally, I called TMO back and happened to mention that I was on UMA. OH! You can't use it on UMA!

I switched off my Wifi Radio and it worked perfectly on EDGE.

So, TETHERING DOES NOT WORK ON UMA. End of story.

The TMO rep had no idea why this was the case, but she really knew what she was talking about and had me fixed in about a minute.

I didn't see this little tidbit anyplace in a search, so I thought it might help y'all.

Tethering is connecting your pc to internet using the phone as a modem since its connected to a cell network...but if its on wifi and off the cell networks data, it makes sense that it wouldnt work...
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 1.5; en-us; T-Mobile myTouch 3G Build/COC10) AppleWebKit/528.5+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.2 Mobile Safari/525.20.1

After reading this I took my 8320 and turned off the radio and tethered to my netbook. I'm writing this while connected using the 8320 and UMA. I made sure the netbook wireless adapter is turned off. Tethering using UMA is working here!

I think the better question is why you would need to connect thru the phone if there is wifi in the area. Unless your computer is 10 years old and doesnt have wifi it should just connect to the wifi network directly.

I tether my laptop to my blackberry all the time, I am on my 3rd blackberry using the Edge/modem connection. If I have wifi, there is no reason for the teathing. I find this works great on the road when you need the laptop more than the phone browser. I am curious how much faster this will work when I get 3G?

I was thinking the same exact thing, if wifi is available why the heck with the tethering?? I tether my phone when I travel in my vehicle or for example on vacation and the house I was staying in didn't have internet. Tethering is a great perk when you absolutely need it. I'm currently using the 9700 but I even tethered on my Pearl 8120 and it wasn't bad at all. From the Boston area and get a great signal. Figured I would throw my thoughts out there.
