Test Driver for Car Magazines?

ok so i want to be a test driver and writer for like motor trend and car and driver magazine. so how could i go about some type of a job shadow for this profession? do i like go to a dealer or what?
i live in the the sacramento,ca area so if you know of anything in this area that would be great.
