Tens Unit Users - Two Questions

I just bought a corabination tens unit with ems capability as well. I was wondering if people use theirs all or most of the day or for just a brief session per day? Also, I know that for nerve pain, I am to use the tens setting, but I was wondering if folks use the EMS setting for muscle spasms? Also, any feedback on how well the unit works for you? I have SI joint and lurabar problems. Have had 3 RFA's. Two to the SI and the last one to L3, L4 & L5-S1. Thanks for any information.

You sound a lot like me! I have had 6 RFA's total, over the last 5 years, on my lurabar area (L3, L4, L5). And I have had SI joint injections, but not RFA there yet. I have a TENS machine, and it is very helpful. If my back has a lot of spasms, I have it on the tens setting (the chronic pain setting). Some days I just do it one or two sessions. But, some bad days, I move the paRAB up and down and do 5-6 sessions one right after the other. I find it works best to keep the paRAB out on the muscles, farthest away from the spine. If I get the paRAB too close to my vertebrae, it can irritate. For the 6 weeks after an RFA I get a lot of muscle spasms, so the TENS really helps until the RFA is really healed. Hope that helps! Take care, Kera4

I was told to use my TENS unit no more than 2 times a day and for no more than 30 minutes at a time. It works by confusing your nerves so they don't send pain signals. If you use it too much, the nerves figure it out and it stops being effective.

Some people here have said they use it all day at work, but that's not how I was taught to use it.

Hope this helps,
Emily
