temperature Gauge Wiring on a 66 chevy truck C10?

ok here is the problem. I have a 66 Chevy truck C10 that came with a 6cyl but i put a 350 chevy engine and well the wiring is the original wiring and i bought a temperature Gauge with 2 prongs and then i bought a wiring diagram for that truck but when i connect it the way that it reads in the diagram, it does not work at one point the gauge needle just went all the way to the end and now it just does not move. I am wondering if any one knows how to connect it directly to the Gauge with out having to go through the original wiring? I just dont under stand how it is supposed to work, maybe one to the battery and the other to the Gauge? right now the gauge has a pink and a green wire connected to it and all the wires work and so do all my lights and stuff it just that i dont know where to connect the wires from the gauge to ? not sure if any one can help me i will really appreciate it and will defenitly get my 10 points.
