Temp gauge not working on 1986 Dodge Ram 150 pickup truck?

replaced temp sending unit and gauge still not working. grounded single wire from temp sending unit and gauge works Are temp sending units for a 360 and 318 engine the same? vin number indicates a 360 engine should be in this truck but may have been swapped out with a 318. any suggestions greatly appreciated from the mechanics out there.
