The 6 best classical musicians not necessarily in order; Vivaldi, Strauss, Ravel, Mozart, Handel, Chopin, Brahms, and my favorite Beethoven.

european art music is divided up into several eras:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaissance_music
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baroque_music
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_period_%28music%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romantic_music

the most widely listened to is probably Baroque and Classical. hope that helps some. i started playing violin when i was 10 and i still haven't found every piece i like. good luck!

If you have recently seen V for Vendetta (Which could have been much better ), the song featured at the end is known as the 1812 overture by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It is played at many 4th of July concerts too. This is one of the most well known classical music pieces. Also, various Beethoven symphonies are quite popular and extremely good. I recommend any type of Mozart if you are studying.

I really like Bolero by Ravel. There's also a piece called Adagio in G minor that I love, but I can't remember the composer right now.
