No tape or paste for me either. The Oring does the trick.
On a side note there is a misconception about teflon tape. Teflon tape is not a sealant, it is a lubricant. Generally speaking, the sealing is achieved by the thread taper or the Oring.
I've used it and not used it and either way had no leaks. So lately I've not used it, just change the o-ring every other oil change and it's worked well for me.
The o-rings are all that you should use. There is a chamfer that they fit in on the bolt hole of the cases and pipe dope will only fill the chamfer and not let the o-ring seat possibly.Pipe thread compound is for tapered pipe threads same as the teflon tape. I took my bike for the 1000k service and two of the tree 0-rings were hanging ripped squished out around the drain plugs. Thought i was seeing things but it was the o-rings and they were forced out of their seats in the cases by white teflon thread compound that had not let the oring go into its seat. I cleaned the white teflon out of the chamfer and stretched a new o-ring over the head of the drain plug and now the o-ring goes into the chamfer and seals as it should. I have the hardened white tefon and ripped o-ring in a plastic bag that i was going to show them at Seacoast HD. I called and was really mad told them what i saw and the service guy wanted to argue that they would make it right and it was not a big deal. I told him and HD which called the next day after my complaint that if i had a warranty issue with this bike that i would burn it and file an insurance claim before i brought it back to seacoast HD. In short use your tape and thread dope on your drain plugs with o-rings if it makes you happy but it not right. Maybe you can get a job a HD dealership.
I use the paste with teflon or the teflon tape or neither depending on my mood. Here lately, I've been using the paste.
The main thing to me is the condition of the o ring-I got a bag of them from McMaster-Carr so I generally replace them each change.
I feel the most important step is to lube the o ring good before installing it so it can "slide" as the bolt is tightened and doesn't grab on the bolt or the oil pan.
