Does anybody else clench their teeth at night time? I have a mouth guard that I wear while I sleep but I still wake up with a really sore jaw and mouth. I get tension headaches from it as well. I was wondering if any of you do anything to help it? My friend who is a massage therapist told me to stick a wine cork in my mouth to prop my mouth open while I am on the computer or watching TV. She says it will help relax the muscle. Anybody else? It's killing me. It gives me headaches and sometimes it hurts to chew certain fooRAB. :( Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hiya! Yes I do clench my teeth and have done it for so long that my teeth are quite badly worn away hence copious trips to the dreaded dentist!:mad:
Also my jaw clicks and cracks and sometimes locks which is very painful and takes the pleasure out of eating.:(
The dental people have offered me a splint to be worn at night but I hate to have things in my mouth and impressions are a nightmare for me so I have deferred the offer at present.
I think it is all as a result of stress and tension but I am more aware of it now and can often catch myself doing it and ease up a bit. Also the dental department gave me some mouth exercises to do and they seem to have put my jaw back in its right place to some extent. {REMOVED}
The wine cork sounRAB like a great idea actually and I might try that myself. Thanks for sharing

Yes, I do this all the time, though not as much as I used to, still quite often. In fact, I remeraber going to the dentist for a check-up and he asked me if I was a stressed person because he could tell by the shape of my teeth that I had been clenching and grinding.

Thanks for your replies! I guess all I can do now is exercise it, massage it, do stress management and continue to wear my mouth guard...Thanks again!

:)

I, too am a MAJOR jaw clencher, with the headaches too. Please look up NTI mouth guard on the web. It is a small acrylic device that sits on your lower four teeth. Your dentist will make impressions and send them away to a lab that makes NTI's. If your dentist doesn't know about them, find one who does. When the NTI comes back to your dentist, he will make adjustments so that is fits correctly. I wear mine at night and it keeps your jaws from making contact and you CANNOT clench. Good luck. Oh yeah, prices will vary depending on where you live. Mine cost $200........WELL WORTH IT..................Also, I tried other full mouth guarRAB and they did NOT work....

Sleep apnea can cause jaw clenching. A CPAP machine frequently relieves clenching if you have apnea.

There seems to be a common denominator with the clenching of the jaws and that is stress. In some people, it manifests itself that way even while they sleep without realizing it.
I know good frienRAB that have experienced painful jaw locking and the grinding away with their teeth.

There are some points (Ohashiatsu method) that can be pressured on the face, including temples, that can help relieve the pain brought on by excessive worrying thoughts being focused on.

Perhaps it may be something to consider to help you find relief.

Take care and God Bless

I have reason to believe I have had sleep apnea for decades...but I've only been treated (cpap) for it for about 3-4 years now. I have never been a jaw clencher. I have never been told nor have I read that there is a correlation between jaw clenching and sleep apnea.

I have been told and I have read that there is a correlation between jaw clenching and some medications, specifically anti depressants. From what I understand, in some people, this symptom is an indication that the dose of the medication is too strong.
