A lot of girls I know who happen to be American also happen to be very competitive when it comes to choices that will determine their entrance into university. I go to a French International school in Canada and have a year and a half left till college (here called "Cegep" -- a two-year vocational school necessary before going to university; look it up), but I've noticed that very few of my classmates are looking into their future, probably thinking they have a safe plan: Staying in this French school for three more years, follow the regular French schooling system with and receive their Baccalauréat dimploma and only start thinking about university plans much later on. I prefer going to Cegep and apply to a programme of my choice as not to be limited to only three branches (Science, French Lit, or Socioeconomics) they offer in the French system.
I am sure you didn't understand half of that -- I apologize, I really should start to be more clear when explaining things -- but my question is, how old are you and have you started thinking about where you want to go to college yet?
