Tech Republic Lumia 900 teardown

i think the guy in the comments sums it up quite well , windows doesnt need dual core it is out performing android / ios / syrabian / blackberry on a single core snapdragon which is some achievment and credit must go to the coders for that awesome work

the more i see of windows/nokia phones the more i like -- oh how i wish there was one that would take my 64gb card so i could use one for a bit

these videos show just how quick windows performs against top smartphones -- welcome to the lumia challenge

I think he does actually. It's a fairly balanced article, mentioning that it performs well and that it's designed to keep the price down. It's just the "mediocre" in the headline that makes it seem like it has an axe to grind.

yep there is some akward moments but the videos get the point across , the lumia is faster at performing most everyday tasks then other smartphones that have higher spec

its a good way of showing people like me (who have been skeptical about windows phones and the hardware it runs on) that the o/s is coded so well to the hardware that it flys

It flies because it's not doing too much behind the scenes in terms of multitasking, which would be great if the fast app switching were implemented well, but it doesn't seem to be (see Steve Litchfield's rant on Why on earth doesn't Windows Phone's app menu use Fast App Switching?) .

Perceived performance is one of Nokia's biggest challenges, because I think most people associate Microsoft & Windows with inefficiency, slow booting, a constant stream of updates & rebooting. It's a shame because Windows 7 is really slick & runs faster than XP on the same hardware, and Windows 8 looks to be faster again on the same kit, demonstrating Microsoft have got it right recently.

Still, I'm not going to be looking at Windows Phone until I hear you can independently control the volume of music playback & ringtones. I mean, c'mon Microsoft!

yep it still has flaws but at the same time i like to compare it to apples early ios , that was lacking at early stages but they added things over time and now its very capable

i think with windows 8 we will see it much more polished and with nokia having more time rather then having to get a phone out like the 800 iam pretty positive that between microsoft and nokia we will get a very decent windows 8 phone (fingers crossed it has micro sd support and the 08 camera module lol )

so you have to get a 2 year contract and still pay $99 for it , that seems exspensive compared to the uk phone deals , how much will a contract cost a month in the usa

Yes, you get the phone for $99 if you sign a 2 year contract. That is a really good deal. For comparison, a 4Gs is $199.99-$399.99 a HTC Titan is $199.99, SGS II Skyrocket is $199.99, Galaxy note is $299.99. The older phones are $.01-$49.99. A new Nokia is half the price as many of the new Android phones and up to 1/4 the price of the top end iPhone.

Edit: the new Blackberries are all $199.99 too.
