Team fortress 2 or counterstrike for Garry's Mod?

So, i've been looking for a new sandbox to play.
I've played literally every single open world/sandbox game to date.
Just finished L.A. Noire. And after you beat that game, there really isn't much to do. 4 minute side missions and some newspapers don't really keep my attention like San Andreas or Saints Row 2 used to.

So i went searching around for a sandbox game and got a lot of recommendations for GMOD. Apparently it is some open sandbox where you can do pretty much whatever you can think up.

But according to everyone, and the website, you have to download either counter strike or team fortress. I have no clue why, but can anyone tell me which one would be better to download?
Graphics wise isn't too big of a deal. I'm asking because I have no idea what the difference is between them, if I'm not actually playing either game, just playing GMOD.
 
I played counter strike on xbox live for 7 years until it got shot down and it was one of my favorite games and probably was the revolutionary game for call of duty and all those other modern warfare games. It is one of the best games ever made in my opinion and also has much better graphics than team fortress on computer. I did not really play much CS source or TF but I can assure you CS is better.
