...right after I let him loose. It used to no bother me that much, but I'm starting to let my sister (who is eight) start grooming him and stuff. She wants to be around horses but can't afford lessons (we live at different houses in different cities), so I decided as long as Tango's being a good boy that day she can give him a good grooming, maybe help tack up (putting the saddle pad on with me watching, etc.). I don't want him having bad manners like that around an eight year old.
Today I left one rein around his neck (not tied, if I would have let go it would have slid off) and took a step back like I was leaving, but kept on hand on him. He tried to take up but I grabbed the reins (no bit in his mouth, the headstall wasn't on, he doesn't do that with tack on) to stop him, and it cracked all the bones in my back and my neck, almost gave me a freakin' whiplash. I just did that until he had no response and stayed still.
I'm going to do it again tomorrow (well, I'm gonna start doing it every time I let him go), and I really don't want to get another whiplash feeling thing. What are ways I can get him to stand still when I first let him go? He loves to gallop around after rides and grooming, even let out a few bucks, then comes over to me. I have to stop that habit.
Driver - I know, she'll never not be unsupervised with him. It's just a bad habit I need broken.
