taking pictures at a college party?

soon I will be taking pictures at a college party I only have the kit lens and the 50mm 1.8 lens i also have a shoe flash but will any of these lens be fine to use? People keep saying to use the 50mm but its just so close and there will be a lot of people there. Also i have been shooting in RAW should I use Raw for the party or stick with Jpeg? thanks
