I have a skyquest xt8 and I want to take some pictures of the moon, orion's nebula, the planets, and other celestial objects that look decent through my telescope. I was at Vanderbilt's observatory recently and I overheard one of their workers talking about amateur astronomers using a webcam, a film canister , and a program that can combine the images to make a better looking one. Can anyone elaborate this for me?

Hi. There are a few programs that let you 'stack' images and extract good images from them. http://www.autopano.net/wiki/action/view/Astronomy_stacker is a case in point.

This is not the best place to get expert advice on astrophotography -- try one of the Yahoo astro imaging groups instead.

With a Dobsonian like yours, you are pretty much limited to photography of the Moon and possibly the bright planets. The Orion Nebula and other deep sky objects are too faint to be imaged at the telescope's prime focus without remounting the telescope on an equatorial mount.
