I just want to get a general opinion of those who might answer this question.
My parents own a gas station. We are selling the current one and are looking to buy a new site in the next month or two. I have been actively participating in this business, even while finishing off my fourth year in an engineering program.
I can do anything they can, and I feel at times even more. This includes the accounting, store management, etc.. I am also the person that always makes the important phone calls and first to get in contact with those who perform major maintenance operations.
There was a time in the summer where I underwent a serious elbow injury which has made me immobile for nearly two weeks. During that time, my parents have told me that they feel as if they are literally short of a man. Nevertheless, I returned to helping them out while recovering. Even while in school, I have extensively helped them undergo some operations and been active in the business; but obviously not as much as I did in the summer. In summary, my parents would state that me working with them and my competence is an honest relief for them.
My dad is 56 years old and has provided enough for the family, and still continues to work hard. Therefore, my mom always tells me how "she and I" will find the next store (as in be the owners) and take care of it ourselves, meaning that we will become business partners. I should mention my mom always had an aptitude for business (unlike my dad).
Being 22 when I graduate, I feel that I have an entire life time to grow the business and hope to be the owner of many stores in the next couple of decades (hoping that the world won't end in 2012 lol). Having discussed this career path with many of my acquaintances and friends, I heard many opinions. These range from, "you should do your own thing" to "you deserve it! ".
My question simply is...Is this something I should feel guilty and loserish about? I should add, Jobs that my parents had even since I was in grade 7 was something that everyone in the family could contribute towards. I had my strong share of contributions.
Thank you for taking your time
