T5 & FontBucket

Has any T5 owner used FontBucket with one of the high res fonts from the hands high web site? I have tried this on the Palm OS5.4 simulator and selecting a high-res font crashes both the release and debug versions of the simulator (so if you haven't tried it, don't risk it!!!). I was just wondering if it worked on the real thing. I have e-mailed hands high about the problem and await their response.

Yup, I have used it on m515 and T3. Now my T5 crashed with it, so of course I have opted not to use it at this time. Please let us know if you get any response from your email......
Thanks,
Carol Casey

Hi Carol,

Thanks for the info. I will pass on to the developers the fact that the problem has been seen on the T5. I will post back here when I have some feedback from them.

I'll apologize first for what will probably be perceived as "snide," but . . . . . .

Welcome to OS 5.4. I'm sorry the two of you are having glitches with FontBucket or anything else you need to work on the T5.

I'm amazed -- simply amazed -- that so many have turned on the T5 and hooted and hollered because it "turned on." The internal memory management combined with other problems, some which haven't even SURFACED yet - make it an

ABSOLUTE NON STARTER

IMHO. Hopefully (for T5 owners), developer after developer will come out with a more bloated version ALL OF US have to endure, just to "fix" T5 problems. Which means if you're running anything else . . . . you just gave up real estate on an upgrade that has no benefit to you.

I was in Fry's the other day and JUST NOW saw and physically held a T5.

(I had of course researched them from before their launching, and was actually VERY excited about them to begin with due to the non-slider permanent landscape. I thought they were going to be GREAT).

It felt like a Rye-Krisp. Forgive me, but I just don't get it. Fry's are actually selling re-worked versions of either old Palm III's or VII's - and that brings up a question:

Does anyone here know of a case where a Palm model was BROUGHT BACK after "retirement" due to popularity? I cannot BELIEVE the T3 is "gone." Absolute lunacy. They discontinued the BEST model, with nothing even on the HORIZON in terms of new development. Treo 650 and T5 - that's it. That's all you get. Pick and suffer?! Cripes.

If the only thing that goes awry with my T5 is the font bucket, I will consider myself lucky. I was VERY relucant to go to a T5 but with the discontinuance of the T3 I will left with little choice...I am not disappointed in the T5. I am disappointed the T3 is no longer being made.

Both your comments are interesting. I do not have a T5, I was using the simulator to test a highly featured wiki-style memo program I am in the process of writing. I own a T3 and absolutley love it. I did not realise that palm had stopped making them. I may well try and pick one or two up as they become end of line items! For what its worth I have thought for quite a while that Palm have lost the plot. They seem to be producing what they want rather than listening to their (formerly?!) loyal but eroding customer base. No integrated 802.11 yet after all this time. But why should they when can sell you a plug-in card at an iflated price? Also, what the hell is wrong with OS6 that it is taking until *next* year to deliver a product. I haven't downloaded the simulator for that one yet, there doesn't seem to be any point rushing!

Anyway, time to get off my soapbox. This wasn't the intention of this thread but what the hell.

Cheers BOB!!

It's not a soapbox. It's a series of statements of fact and concern!! Yep. "Lost the plot" is right. BLOWS, doesn't it?

At least you've got a T3. Good man. My 2nd choice for a "spare" (since I've got my T3 TWEAKED and have no real need for a new one unless it breaks) would actually be a Tapwave Zodiac2. OS5.2 (same as T3), 128MB of memory, a little weird looking for a "non-gamer," but at least it's constant "landscape" albeit horizontal. ONly drag is I looked at one at Fry's (along with the RyeCrisp) and could make it flash "dangerously close to crashing, just be repeatedly hitting or holding a button. Oh oh. Hopefully it was the "demo" being wonky.

Don't waste your time fretting over OS6 - it's my feeling it will never come. Hell, they can't handle WIFI, for heaven's sake.

"Someone's" version of OS6 will either be Linux and skinnable for PPC and PALM, or P1 won't survive long enough. It's been put off twice . . . and for my money they should have shelved 5.4 too. They should instead developed new T3/4 and TE/TE2 models keeping OS5.2, with Treo phone models and increased WiFi capability for people who wanted ONE unit to be phone and PDA.

I've always thought a phone should be a good one, and a Palm should be a good one - and a Treo ain't a T3 - can't vouch for how good a PHONE it is.

With TealAlias, JackSprat/JackFlash, and a new product that's taking its time but will offer A LOT, you will be able to have virtually unlimited "room" on your T3. You're wise to look around for another one, and I will do the same although probably left it too late (I've been buried in PC stuff and not wearing my "Palm Hat" enough over the last couple of months!). If you tweak the T3 right, it'll be a long time before ANYTHING can surpass it for raw ability and storage.

You got a good one. Carol: You can always look for another T3, keep the T5, and you'll be one of the resident experts on T5/OS 5.4 stuff! It's all good in the long run.

I'm "patiently" (HAHAHAHA!!!) waiting for the "next shoe to drop" . . . something that will allow me to use my OS 5.2 Bonsai/Teal/Agendus proggies, but with a new face, a gain in power and new capabilities. Linux could do that. Apple could do that.

P1 won't.

I have had a couple of replies from the support group (person?) at handshigh re the fontbucket problem. They have obviously been to the Palm 'there is no problem with the Zire 72, the paint doesn't flake' school of public relations.

Their response:
'It works fine on OS 5.4 based simulators, like the Treo650 and T5. It does
work strangely on the Garnet 5.4 simulator currently, but since this does
not reflect a real device, we are not supporting it.'

I wasn't aware that there was a simulator for the T5 other than Garnet OS5.4 and despite them saying there is one on the palm webiste I cannot find it.

Bottom line is...no joy there then.

I also find 'It works strangely' = crashes the simulator to be an interesting interpretation.

Am currently thinking about my next move.

Bob
