T3 sync to Outlook

Hi all!

Once again my trusty T3 is causing me untold stress and anxiety! I?ve got a new PC running XP and Outlook 2002. There?s an existing pst file and all I want to do is sync the T3 to a new pst file.

I?ve installed hotsync from the disc, then installed Outlook updaters 1.01 and 1.02. The T3 refuses to sync the calendar and locks up, requiring a soft boot.

I rang Palm help and got no help. Excuse my whinge here but as an English-speaking resident of Brisbane Australia I find it a tad stressful to be talking to someone in Manilla (I?m guessing) over an obviously international phone connection complete with hissing background and voice delay, only to find that said help person knows less about the T3 than I do and has even less English! Ahhhhhhhh!
.
.
.
.
.
I?m calm now and feel better for getting that off my chest.

I?ve uninstalled the software and reinstalled, with the same result. Can anyone help me out with the ?setting up Hotsync guide for idiots?? Please?

Cheers,

MO

Outlook alias LookOut is the culprit.

Try this and see if it will fix the issue:

In Outlook under the help menu is a "detect and repair" option. Run this detec and repair....depending upon your configuration it may ask for the install CD so keep it handy.

I'll lay you odds this will fix the sync problem.

Thanks Bill Gates for such a wonderful program as LookOut.

Moose,

Thanks for your advice but no good I'm afraid.

Since doing the repair bit as you suggested, I've done the following:

In trying to sync between my T3 and my PC running XP and Outlook 2002, I have (roughly in this order):

Uninstalled Hotsync.
Uninstalled Outlook.
Cold booted the T3.
Reinstalled Outlook and selected my old pst file.
Reinstalled Hotsync from the disc (ver 4.0).
Installed the Hotsync update 4.1.0 + Outlook conduit updaters 1.01 and 1.02.
Configured Hotsync to sync my contacts only, everything else is set to "do nothing". The reason I did this is that originally the sync got stuck at the calendar and but did sync contacts.

I then ran Hotsync and got a Smartheap "out of memory error" (see attachment) the first time. Subsequent syncs I get the same problem as before, being that the sync window pops up on the PC for a second or two and the T3 just seems to hang and eventually fails the sync saying the connection was lost.

Have I mentioned I miss my Psion?

Any help, advice, empathy would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

MO

Here is the most drastic solution:

Uninstall everything. Then go into the Regedit on the PC and remove all mentions of the following:

Palm, PalmDesktop, your user name for the Palm, references to PRC, PDB's that are Palm related.

I had loaded the T5 onto my laptop that had a previous version of the Palm Desktop which was a Treo 600. After goofy around with Chapura Pocket Mirror Pro and other issues - Chapura's tech support had me remove all of the old references.

Now here is the other thing....once you've got everything removed and reinstalled - you will need to run the detect and repair option in Outlook a last time because you will get corruption.

I can't say that this will work for you but I can say that very similar error messages have been occuring with several friends using both the Palm and Pocket PC editions and the above has solved the problems.

If you are not comfortable with using the regedit function then I'd say find someone who is close by but with the later machines you can always do a system restore to take the device back to way it was before but make a back up of the registry file just to be certain and safe.

Moose,

Thanks for that. I did it all, deleting God knows how many registry items, which is strange considering the program was supposed to have uninstalled everything.

Alas, I've still got the same problem. This leaves me with two thoughts. (1) The T3 is corrupted or (2) the pst file is corrupted.

I should explain about the pst file. I run Outlook 2003 at work where I've always synced my T3. I'm leaving this company and taking the T3 with me and so wanted to sync with my home PC running Outlook 2002.

To do this I created a 2002 compatible pst file with Outlook 2003, then exported my data from Outlook's ost file to the pst file. It is this pst file that I've moved to my home PC and which I'm trying to sync to.

I've no doubt you'll say that Outlook 2003 is the culprit and that I've got a dodgy pst file which, having written the above, would seem likely.

Your thoughts?

Can you open the PST file on the home PC?

I actually suspect that the Outlook Profile is the culprit and is preventing you from accessing. The profile at work might have been different then the one at home and the conduit is searching for the work profile.

Try the following:

Go to the Control Panel and double click on the mail icon. Then select the Profile button and see if you have more than one profile for your Outlook client.

If you do, change the profile to the one not being used and see if that might enable you to sync.

You may have to delete all of your profiles and start anew and hard reset the T3 in order for it to forget the profile as well. Keep plugging along and I'll keep up the suggestions until they become WAG's but I always warn when I'm WAGGING.

Moose man,

The pst files opens fine on the home PC. I'll try what you suggest re profiles tonight and advise.

In desperation I re-imported the pst file data into my work laptop Outlook 2003 and synced with no issues.

Thanks again,

Okidoki.

I removed the two existing users in Control Panel/Mail. I tried to remove the user in Palm Desktop but it wouldn't let me (it says there must be at least one). I cold booted the T3.

Having done the above, I tried to do a sync and a window popped up asking if I wanted to create a new user. Choosing NO exits out and cancels the sync. Choosing YES does nothing (in the way of creating a new user) and the sync continues to run, doing nothing until it fails.

I then created a new user in Outlook and selected this same user in Hotsync and Palm Desktop. When synching, I'm asked to select a user, which I do by selcting the newly created (and only) one. But success in synching.

What I didn't do first was to do a regedit and remove all Palm and User related entries.

Perhaps I should do a complete uninstall, remove users, strip the registry, reinstall, etc, etc? I'm a little concerned about removing registry entires for users as I might inadvertantly remove one unconnected to the T3.

?????

What a Bugger!

I think you'll have to unistall the Palm Desktop and then reinstall. Do a full regedit again.

Upon reinstallation, the first time you attempt to sync to LookOut it should ask you which Mail Profile (the .pst) you want to use. It doesn't have to be similar to the Palm User name but it should ask you.

It's in this Mail Profile, I'm certain. Also, run a detect and repair after you've unistalled, regedited and reinstalled. You might just try to run detect and repair again before you do all of the above and see if that might set the correct user for the PST?

Moose,

Did it all including the uninstall, regedit, reinstall and the repair on Outlook. When I ran the sync it asked me if I wanted to use the Outlook mail user (the only one in the list) I selected yes, the sync started and failed as usual.

Question: Thru all this I've been installing the Palm software from the disk (4.0.0), then updating it to 4.1.4, then running the conduit updaters 1.01 and 1.02.

Are you OK with this? Keep in mind I'm running Outlook 2002 at home and 2003 at work.

I'm ok with the installation,

The difference between 2002 and 2003 should not impact the device for hot sync but I believe that the updated to the conduit is designed for Outlook 2003 only.

My only other suggestion, especially now that the device has recognized the mail profile, is one of a USB problem.

Are you attempting to hot sync via a USB hub? If so, change to a direct USB connection. I have seen where some hubs simply won't handle the power of the transfer but will initiate and disconnect.

Go to the My Computer Properties, then click on the Hardware Tab and then click on the Device Manager button. Initiate a hot sync and the USB connection should add a Palm Device either to the main Hardware Tree or perhaps under the USB root....if during the hot sync process you don't see this "addition" then now it's a hardware problem.

If you get the pop up Palm Device found and it stays in place for as long as the hot sync appears then it may be a power issue to the USB connection. Or it may be a conflict of software....try deleting this "connection" by right clicking on it when it pops up then deleting it. Then initiate another hot sync and you'll probably get the new hardware found and then allow the computer to install it by searching for it automatically without the install disk in the CD.

If you do not get the pop up then its software conflict.

Try changing the port used for the USB connection.

One simple thing to check that I didn't mention before - on the hot sync icon in the system tray - be certain that the only option checked is Local USB and not infrared or network or any other options....it may be trying a network sync rather than Local USB.

Post back - I'm still not WAGGING.

Moose,

I get the pop up re the USB and new hardware device found and I've got Hotsync set for local sync only. Did everything else to no avail.

I then set up a user profile using the same name as my laptop. The synch then worked (up to a point) by telling me that the T3 was probably synchronised with another PC and synching with this PC could cause duplications. I went ahead and contacts synched ok, nothing else.

I'm leaving this job today and (probably) have to hand in the T3. (Hence the reason for the backup to my home PC) so I've run out of time. I do appreciate all you help.

Thanks again.

Cheers,

MO

Too bad you had to give it back.

I had hopes that we'd eventually get it. Hopefully, you got the most important data off it with regards to the contacts.

I don't understand why it would only sync the contacts and nothing else.....strange.

Good luck in your new job. :)
