This is my 1st palm, after new software installation, my T3 is not working, only can see the backlight, nothing else, it din't respond to soft or hard reset, just stay with backlight on and nothing else, please help

Hi,
I gotta admit im not much of an expert here. BUt to get some help with your problem here (which you most probably will), you gotta be more specific about your problem. Which software did you install before your incident? Got a software log of the stuff in your palm? This will facilitate work for people like Jim.

If your Palm has not responded to a hard reset then it is time to seek a replacement from Palm. I assume it is still under the manufacturer?s warranty.

I am also assuming you accomplished the Hard Reset by holding down the Power Button and inseting the tip of the stylus into the Reset hole on the back, you then waited until the Palm Logo came up. Next you released the power button and responded to the question regarding ?delete all data?? by pushing the scroll button up.
If you did this and the logo never appeared then short of telling you to try a Hard Reset again and again I think it is time to call Palm.

My wife's TE locked up in a similar fashion and I think it was on the 20th reset it finally got the idea and has worked well since.

You might want to look around the edges of the screen to see if a small bit of trash has lodged between the surface of the screen and the edge of the case. Take a thin piece of plastic and slip it between the two surfaces and use a motion that would flip out anything trapped. Such events are not common but can bring the Palm to a halt by throwing the digitizer off balance.

I had the same problem and it occured to me that if this was a big computer, I'd turn it off at the mains and reboot. So in effect that is what I did with my T3. You can get into the back off it by removing the screws on the side and sliding the bottom away from the top by pushing pins in the two little holes on the back near the sliding mechanism.
Then you will see a black and red battery wire attached to a tiny plug on the circuit board. You can carefully lever this off to break the connection and when you push it back on again... bingo! the chimes will sound and it will reboot (although this is effectively a hard reset and you will have to reinstall any data you may lose).
Having said this, I must warn you that this will probably invalidate any guarantee you may have and you need the nerves of a bomb disposal expert - but what the hell!... if you can't wait...

I have my T3 back and working, thanks bravelucy

If the SW you just installed is the Driver for the NEW PalmOne Universal Keyboard, THEN DON'T RE-INSTALL IT!

This driver from CD is known to cause the T3 to fail with a WSOD (White Screen Of Death) and battery disconnection appears to be the only fix.

-------------------------------------------
Use the updated driver (12/13/04, ver 1.05) at P1 download instead: http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/tungsten.html

It still has some issues, but does not appear to cause WSOD. Specifically it DOES NOT work with the Phone Link Update (11/29/04) - UWKBD driver will cause Fatal Exception if the Phone Link Update is also installed.

You've gotta be nuts to void your warrenty to reset you palm. You should have posted your hotsync log on here and one of us could have given you a much less invasive way of fixing your Palm. I CAN NEVER and I know many other here agree YOU SHOULD NEVER EVER EVER OPEN UP YOUR PALM. YOU COULD KILL IT EVEN MORE AND TO THE POINT OF NO RETURN AND THEN NO WARRENTY.

Next time be patient and we can work through these things virtually instead of physically doing surgery on your palm

Cyclinghermes -

If you know of any way to "reset"a Palm locked in the "White Screen of Death or Black/Grey Screen of Death" please let me know!

Other than waiting 4 - 8 hours or more for the battery to die or disconnecting the battery by removing the back of the Palm, there isn't any way that I'm familiar with.

I try a lot of software - and have had the WSOD on at least 3 or 4 occasions, including the initial problem with Jack Sprat / Flash. All of them solved by "opening" up the back of the Palm and disconnecting the battery and then just a re-connect.

WARNING - This is not a "RECOMMENDED" fix for the Palm. You CAN VOID THE WARRANTY and do PERMANENT DAMAGE to the Palm if not performed correctly.

There is NO NEED to remove any screws to perform the disconnect. Just pressing the "hidden" latches on the reverse and a slow downward pull on the slider (no more than 1/2 inch), reveals the battery connection. No "force" is needed, just a slow, patient hand.

And unless you do "force" the removal and break a ribbon cable, when you replace the slider (again, no force needed) the Palm has no indication it was ever disassembled.

As of now, both my T|T and T3 are out of warranty, so I have no warranty to worry about. :-) But I did disassemble both when in warranty with no ill effects.

I'd love to have a "hard reset" from any of the "Screens of Death"without having to open the Palm.

WARNING - This is not a "RECOMMENDED" fix for the Palm. You CAN/WILL VOID THE WARRANTY and do PERMANENT DAMAGE to the Palm if not performed correctly.

Frank,

I understand your method and it's creative, but the risks are way too risky. You could destroy your palm and you VOID your warrently. It's worth waiting 8hrs to not have that happen.

I hate to jump into this "dangerous" discussion but I think it is a simple solution and if one is careful the cable stays intact....no harm done!
If you wait the 8 hours there is some damage done to the battery. Fully discharging the battery shortens the life of an already short-lived battery and then you will need to take the back off to put the new battery in.

Check out the gethightech.com site for a complete photo layout that gives you a step by step for the full disassembly of the Palm T series.

FWIW - I was busy when I first posted, and didn't include battery disconnection instructions. I'm glad they made it to this thread.

I do suggest that one only do the battery disconnection if they are handy with small tools and electronics. IOW - fumble fingered people shouldn't do it themselves.

------------------------------------------

Personally I waited 1 1/2 days (36 hours) and my T3 was still dead with WSOD (after installing bad P1 UWKBD driver).

So the 8 hour wait (or so) does not work at all. I believe this is due to PDA going into a safe mode that keeps RAM alive, but one cannot turn on PDA (aka battery does not drain very fast).

There's no evidence of warranty voiding if battery disconnection is done properly (no scratches or other indications of case being opened).

MANY others have same problems with UWKBD driver, and had to resort to PDA battery surgery. There's a couple of (long) threads discussing this at rabroad and P1 forums.
