T2 - Digitizer Problems????

1.) My digitizer screen does not operate properly...about 70% of the time, I tap on icons, down-arrows, or try to select different "touch sensitive" buttons on the display or even try to tap my "I" beam curser in front of a word and the function does not happen.....it's like where I tap and where the Tungsten thinks I tapped are in two different locations....

I have recalibrated my digitizer several times, tapping in the center of the "X" where it indicates - going through that entire process....but it never "sticks".....it will not react to my stylus where I tap. Sometimes it does, many times it does not.

I am VERY unahappy with this handheld.

2.) Quite often, when I open up (expand) the Tungsten, the handheld will beep twice. And if I have a "contact" highlighted, after a few seconds the handheld will automatically go into the details of that contact, switching screens without me even tapping a selection button to do so. What's up with that???

Also, I had recently done a "hard reset" because I had a third party "frogger" like game that was constantly running in the background making "beeps" and "blips" and selecting things that I didn't personally select. At this time I also deleted and reinstalled my desktop palm software.

I "beamed" my contacts and to-do lists back into the newly reset T2 from my old Palm.

Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, digitizer problems are well known with the Palm T series. One of the things to check is around all the edges of the screen and slider of any dust or debris as these can cause both digitizer and slider problems. Using canned air to blow out the edges seems to help in some cases.

Normally, uninstalling and reinstalling the desktop software does not erase any data. You should have been able to do a normal restore after you did the hard reset. What model of Palm did you beam the files from?

Thank you for your quick reply Jim,

I beamed the data back to the Tungsten T2 from a Handspring Platinum model with the Palm OS. Everything came in fine.

I also placed my digitizer problems into an email I sent to Palm through their "support" site. I have not received a reply from them yet. Sent it this morning.

I'm concerned because it is very frustrating when you try to take notes, edit notes and navigate during a meeting with a customer and you find yourself making people wait while you fight with the @#$@ pda.

If the digitizer problem is common, then what do you suggest I do? I've probably had it for about 5 months......

Sultan,

Saw the other post.

Jim's got some good suggestions and let me add to them: If your using a screen protector - they are bad about getting under the edges of the frame and causing errant digitizer issues especially pre-T3. So you might want to remove it - if you have one.

Also, certain programs such as TealScript/Mobiwrite/Graffati Anywhere/ can cause "drift". You might want to temporarily uninstall them.

The (TungstenT) had a patch for errant digitizer issues but the T2 never had such a release.

Have you got any other programs installed that might have adverse impact on the digitizer......a bug me or other such note pad that's not the default software? Then double check for the latest editions of all of these programs and make certain that your running them to avoid any other issues.

This is though as Jim pointed out a fairly common problem with the T series although it was reported more with the T then the T2.

Mooseman - all I have is the one "Bible" program as stated....everything else is stuff installed directly from Palm....documents to go is one of these, off the disk that came with the unit.

Here's an example of what it just did: I enter my "to do" software and tap on one of my yellow "note" icons next to a to do item. Instead of the "note" coming up, the "due date" to the right of it pops up, or else I can't get anything at all to display even if I try multiple taps on the "note" icon, or roll the stylus all around the note icon - - - nothing, or the wrong thing.

What are the warranties on these things??? Can I take it back to Office Max and get a refund or what?

I would definitely try and get it replaced. Typical Palm warranty is only 90 days. If you paid by credit card.....then it may have an extended warranty.

You should try and get it exchanged considering that bad of a problem. If Office Max won't help then contact Palm and see but they aren't usually very helpful but may be willing to do something if the retailer won't.

In the US, for the Tungsten series the typical warranty is 1 year, for the Zire series the typical warranty is 90 days. Exceptions are: The Tungsten E which is only 90 days and the Zire 71 and 72 which are both 1 year. Reference.

Palm just had me send my Tungsten T2 in for repair/replacement. I just followed along the T3-Digitizer problem thread and am thinking that these Palm brand PDA's suck.

What's the thought on a PDA with the "other" operating system?

Oh and most importantly.....would a repaired/refurbished unit have a fix that is dependable or do they send you the same flawed design?

Well, got my T/2 back from warranty repair. I noticed the slider is really bad now...it barely stays clicked open.

Now, after about 2-3 weeks the digitizer has gone to crap again.

Palm products suck in my opinion.....I'm calling them to raise hell and I will be moving over to try a Pocket Pc....
