T to T3 - simple upgrade?

I loved my T up until I dropped it flat on it's face the other day and ruined the display. Of course this is also an OPPORTUNITY! My limitations: Windows 98; Palm Desktop version 4.1.4 (which the Palm download site says is compatible for the T3); poor current finances.

If I bought an inexpensive used T3 until I can afford to upgrade to my dream super Mac desktop/top line smartphone, what would be the best procedure for making this tranfer (same username?, best info transfer, etc)? I have some third-party software on a SD card, but nothing crucial to my business.

Thanks for the help... :D

I don't remember if the T3 supports W98 - but assuming it does - install the Palm Desktop software for the T3 - use the same user name and hot sync. There is not enough difference between the two devices to worry about any other issues - they shouldn't occur.

If the T3 is not supported on W98 - then I wouldn't recommend the install of the desktop and hope that it will work, but I believe that the T3 was still supported on W98 so it's simple.

Thanks for the response - palm.com does recommend Desktop 4.1.4 for T3/W98 combination. So after doing a hard reset on the T3 to be sure it's clean, would I do a "Custom" hotsync to be sure the Desktop overwrites the Palm in all the resident software?

During installation in the method outlined - it will do this automatically when you are prompted to do your first hot sync. However, if it does not prompt you during the desktop installation to then I'd suggest a different route.

The reason being - if you force the hot sync from the desktop to overwrite the handheld then some of the Preferences settings for the T will be written to the T3 which is not a good thing.

Hot Sync will recognize that the device is void of data (assuming you did the hard reset correctly) and have installed the desktop for the T3 - and upload the existing data and clean out any system files from the T's desktop that should not be installed on the T3.

If you want to be doubly safe - make a copy of the following folders:

C:\program files\palm\YOUR USER NAME

If you copy this YOUR USER NAME folder and all of it's subfolders to another path (temporary I'd suggest your desktop or somewhere in My Documents) then your data is now backedup and can be safely restored in the event of an error (unlikely but not impossible) error during the first hot sync for the T3.

Thanks again - I will do this backup to be safe. But since I already have the Desktop version Palm recommends for the T3/Win98 combination (4.1.4) with all my data on it, I'm not going to re-install Desktop, right? Just put the same username on the blank T3 and sync?

You need to install the T3's desktop in order for the "preferences" to be configured for it and not the T. The suggestion I'm making are Palm suggestions about upgrading - so I'd still recommend that you install the T3's desktop - to follow their guidelines and to insure that you get the correct saved and unsaved preferences on your device.

Let say you hard reset the device and then you started the hot sync process - you'd be prompted for the Username since Hot Sync would see the device is void of a username (you can't put a username on a device without it being hot sync'd). If you picked the same user name as the T - then all of the T's preferences would be installed onto the T3 - it wouldn't recognize that the T3 has the slider and the larger screen - it would attempt to run all of the programs in 320 X 320 instead of 320 X 480 resolution.

By installing the T3's desktop (same version as the T's with the exception of these preference files) you are telling Hot Sync that it's a new device and you want to "copy" the user files from the old device to the new device but without copying the preferences.
