My mom and I are on the same plan at T-Mobile. I've been at T-Mobile for years, but my mom just got her phone there in August, and we put us on the same plan while we were there.
Instead of $70 for unlimited texting and calling, I would now be paying only $40, and so would my mother. The guy there specifically told us that this would not be a mandatory contract, and that we could cancel at any time. It was the pre-pay system, with no annual contract, he told us. So we did it. I remember the guy very specifically, because he was a handsome dark-skinned lad, and because of this, I also remember very clearly what he said.
This week, my mother and I went back there, because she wanted to get a phone from AT&T instead, so we were going to separate our plans so she could cancel hers. The guy there told us that we had a 2-year contract ending in 2013, and it would be $200 to cancel it. How is that possible, when we were told that it was NOT a binding contract, and that we could cancel at any time, when my mom got her phone?
And I KNOW that's what the guy said, because when my mom bought her phone from them, she had to pay for the entirety of the phone, right then. Had it been a contract, she would have been able to pay for the phone with monthly payments. But since we were signing up for the pre-pay system, where we could cancel at any time, she had to pay for the phone first.
So is there anything I can do about this? We were obviously lied to.
