Synopsis, Query Letters and Agents! Oh, my!?

And I thought writing the novel would be the difficult part!

1) Does anybody have any advice on how to write a wonderful synopsis? I'd like to know what information to include, how much backstory I should tell, etc. Any suggestions or advice will be helpful.

2) What information should be in a query letter? Should I put the entire synopsis in the letter, or should the description of the novel for the query be more brief than the synopsis?

Once again, any information at all will be valuable to me. Please include anything else I may need to know before submitting my ms.
