Symbian gets 22 million Euros from European techs, new consortium called SYMBEOSE.

I think you're right about the motive behind their decision, but I would add vs China vs Korea(Bada) vs ...Japan?

Not that I dislike the idea of keeping Symbian alive, but the reasoning behind it, is pretty sad. It's a shame that we are all so afraid of each other that such moves are necessary.

Still much better than the Engaget article last week that basically left Symbian for dead.

For me the money situation doesn't bother me, because I'm "Very interested" to see where Nokia is a year from now with Symbian updating/evolving and also how the public reacts to Meego... :)

The SF needing public money leaves more of a black mark for them than anything though. Besides, manufacturers left Symbian also because there's no service layer available for the platform. Nokia has Ovi and their services, but they weren't willing to open up to the other manufacturers.

Samsung, Motorola and S-E went to Android because Google supplied the service layer.

Unless the EU decides to create a mobile service layer for Symbian, it's still going to be a Nokia-only effort.

Maybe that's the deal that needs to be worked. Nokia needs to open Ovi in exchange for Symbeose (arrghh!!, what an ugly name) public money.
