switching phones on verizon wireless..?

i tried switching my phone both online and on the phone but each time it says "we could not process your request" before i even enter most of the important information. the only thing is, it will work online for my sister on the same plan as me... they let her enter information without a problem, but every time i try to switch to a different phone on my line, it says it won't work.
could anyone possibly know why this is? i would call customer service, but i'd rather ask here first to see if anyone has an answer before i waste time sitting on the phone with someone explaning this for a half hour
