Switching from smartphone to non-smartphone

In a month or 2 I plan to purchase an unlocked Sony Ericsson S710a. My last few phones beginning with the earliest: Treo 180, Nokia 3650, Nokia N-Gage QD and Audiovox SMT5600. On the S710a I can sync my calendar and contacts using either SyncML with my PC or through iSync on my Mac. Since I use Gmail for email, I'll use Gmail Mobile from the WAP browser. The S710a has Edge, a decent 1-megapixel camera, a rather large screen and Bluetooth.

Has anyone else considered switching from a smarphone to phones such as the S710a? If so, what were your reasons?
 
I debated it heavily as the nokia smartphones I was used to kept going to small keypads that I couldn't use. I was seriously considering the n90, but just wasn't super impressed. I like the Sony lineup and listen to MP3s a ton. As I was about to make a s710a purchase I got a new job and have had to keep track of multiple projects, keep on top of mail from multiple accounts, do financial management, etc. etc. So that reuired a smartphone.

I personally think if you do not have to do anything more than check email a few times and plan basic events, you should be fine with a non smartphone. I think overall you will miss some of the apps on a smartphone and the ability to customize it, but the gap has shrunk SOOO much that you can really get by with any phone as long as you keep it mostly simple.
 
Email - Gmail Mobile with WAP browser or Opera Mini. Maps and Directions - Google Local Mobile Java app. Web Browsing - Google Mobile with WAP browser or Opera Mini. I don't need any smartphone programs.
 
yeah, you are fine without a smartphone. That is cool because it really opens up the possibilities when you don't need specific programs.
 
Add these:
Games - Java games
Calendar & Contacts - Synced with Mac Address Book & iCal through iSync OR with Microsoft Entourage through SyncML on 4Smartphone Hosted Microsoft Exchange Server
 
java games can be run anywhere. the syncing calendar .. I am not that sure about. I know SE can synch with the basic calendar to isync "ok", nokia I hear has problems. Everyone else is a big question mark, so you might want to pick the phone first, then ask that forum about synching possibilities to make your search easier
 
I went from a Nokia 7610 to a Sony Ericsson S710 myself. I didn't really need to features of a smartphone so the change didn't bother me. Non smartphones generally have better media capabilities IMO. Most of the features you seem to want can be had on reg phones. SE does have syncing apps etc. The S710 may just be the phone you're looking for. There are always more expensive alternatives but SE makes generally good phones.
