Swelling behind knee

I have had swelling (minimal) and pain behind my knee for a little over a year now. I also have pain in the front of my knee, some calf pain and pain near my ankle. At one point there was actually a dark bruise under my knee on the back side of my leg. I have no known knee injury, no redness and the swelling is only in that one particular area. I got it checked out last year ( I was worried I might have a blood clot) and one physician said I had a Baker's cyst, another said there wasn't one, it was just immflamation. Both said no clot. Am I just paranoid? or should I be worried? I drive a lot (over an hr a day for work and back) and my leg makes me crazy while on the road. Could a Baker's cyst cause these kinds of symptoms? What other possibilities are there?

It sounds like a Baker's Cyst that ruptured (the bruising) and is now reforming. I've had one for years that comes and goes, I have rheumatoid arthritis - baker's cysts are part of the package. Driving could certainly irritate it.

Make sure you see an orthopedic surgeon, not just a regular MD. And a MRI (not an x-ray) can show if there's a meniscal tear or some other injury causing the problem. Cysts can be drained or even removed entirely if it gets real bad.

I had an ultrasound done to check for DVT which was negative. Dr said it was a Baker's cyst and pretty much said the same thing you did about the bruise probably having had been where it ruptured. He mentioned cortisone injection. Have you tried this with yours?

Sometimes what looks like a bruise is actually an Erythema Migrans, which may explain some of your symptoms.
