it isnt mumps either. if you look up the symptoms of mumps i only have one. which is swelling(along with several other issues, swelling is a common side effect). i havent had a fever and the parotid gland that would be the gland thats infected for mumps and its in front of the ear. alot of my pain is behind my ear and down my neck. i do have some pain in front of my ear but its not nearly as bad as the other areas. the nurse i saw basically ruled this out due to other symptoms. my neck is very sore and i can almost not stand. the first symptoms of mumps is a headache and fever. i never had a fever and i just got my headache monday, after all the swelling and pain was already occurring. thanks for trying though i appreciate your help.

You should still see a MD ASAP. This MD should probably be a specialist in ENT. You now describe the pain as behind your ear and going down your neck. You could have an abscess, however, it could be within your ear. I work with someone who had very similiar symptoms and he spent 3 days inpatient on iv antibotics. If you are now having a hard time getting up, than you really need to seek immediate medical assistance.

i went away for the weekend on thursday and sunday when i woke up my jaw and neck were both swollen along with the gland behind my right ear. the area in front of my ears are swollen and very sore. my neck is so swollen it doesnt look like i have ear lobes. i have severe pain from in front of both ears down to my jaw and down half of my neck. the areas ache all day long and hurt even more to touch or move. i went and saw a nurse and she said it was viral or bacterial and its mostly in the muscle. i dont have a sore throat and my tonsils look normal she said. she had no idea what it could be but put me on antibiotics anyways. she put me on oxycycline. the swelling seems to increase mostly at night. when im laying in bed i feel it throbbing and i can feel it enlarging. it hurts to open my mouth and even just laying here my neck and jaw are both throbbing with pain. this morning i woke up in a freezing cold sweat. at first i thought it was an allergic reaction so i took benadryl and that had no effect because when i woke up the next day (Monday) the swelling had increased to the area below my chin. since monday i have also had a headache. this only started monday morning and it is now tuesday. i only weigh 115lbs and am very active and in shape. my face on the other hand now looks like it alone gained 50 lbs. i was told to take advil and alieve but neither one really touch the pain. if it does its only so i can open my jaw about an inch without more pain. i have never had an ear infection and i have had my mumps shots when i was about 6. my temp has been at a constant 98.6f. please let me know if you have any idea.

so after i posted about my pain, i got out of bed and the pain is the worst its been even on these antibiotics. i tried to eat some oatmeal and my stomach is in a knot 5 min later. i dont understand whats going on. im a very healthy person and even when i do get sick i can normally keep anything down just fine. but now my stomach is gurgling and churning.

she tried telling me tmj from grinding my teeth. first of all im going to dental school. i dont grind me teeth im very conscientious about them. second i have never not been able to open my mouth. even though it was sore to do so its never locked on me. thirdly i have swollen glands. tmj does NOT cause swollen glands. she prescribed me muscle relaxers and told me to go home. i said what about all this swelling she said ice it or use heat, what ever works. WHAT EVER WORKS? SHE'S THE DOCTOR SHE SHOULD BE TELLING ME WHAT WILL WORK. my grandfather is a retired surgeon and he flipped. i dont understand doctors these days. she didnt even ask to have any blood drawn just to rule out possibilities. so why is my stomach upset when i eat and why do i have a pounding headache and why are my glands swollen if i supposedly have LOCK JAW!! she made me so mad. yesterday i was furious...:mad::mad:

Hi Cowgurlbarbie39,

Time to have your grandfather use his influences. Is he able to accompany you to the nearest up to date and experienced hospital emergency room? Does he still have friends in the business, e.g. a good ENT who specializes in head/neck surgery? Sometimes you just need to get the right people to go with you to do the talking and who knows the right buttons to push.

If you lived anywhere near the Boston area, I would recommend a great ENT. His initials are Dr. R.S. and he practices out of ST.E.M.C. ( I think using intials is legal on this board)

Keep fighting to you get some satisfaction.

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your dilemma. I had something similar happen to me and a friend recently had a similar experience. Have you checked to see if you may have an infected lymph node? I was told it was an infected Salivary gland. My face was swollen and had a bump on my face by my ear. I was also told it may be TMJ. I was on anti biotics for a while until the pain and swelling went down. I hope this might give you some ideas. My friend's turned out to be a swollen lymph node behind the ear. I suggest you see an EMT immediately. Hope all goes well for you. I had the swelling for about 1 month and could not sleep on the right side of my head. Hope I was of some help.

It sounds like the mumps to me. I know you had the shot, but nothing is 100%. Mumps are so rare nowadays that most people don't know what to look for. I'd call a doctor and see what they tell you to do. Best wishes
