Im buying a 1986 rm80 for 100$ from my good friends (Yeah it sounds like a rip but it im fixing it up it still runs its for my little brother ) And the magneto is shot if we have spray wd-40 on it for it to start and it seems once it gets hot it will shut off and it bogs out , And the motor runs strong and everything but im not sure if it needs the flywheel or the stator And everytime the casing is off the side and we look at the magneto when we rev it up the magneto looks like its kinda sliding to the side
And im not sure if it needs a stator or a magneto because I dont feel like spending 100$ on two parts when it only needs one? someone please help me?

The stator is the part that does not move. The stator in a magneto, is the magneto. The shaft that spins inside the stator is the rotor.

The rotor almost never goes bad. It is a solid piece of metal with magnets. The stator/magneto, can go bad. It is rare though.

If the stator/magneto is moving and it does not have a mechanical advance, then that is the problem. You did not say what year the bike is, so we will not know if it has a mechanical advance or a electronic advance. Most modern dirt bikes do not use a mechanical advance, so if it is moving, there is a problem.

Make sure the stator/magneto is secure and not moving. There might be loose or stripped bolts holding it onto the engine case which are allowing it to move.

You can also take the stator/magneto into the dealer and have them test it to see if it is functioning properly.
