Suzuki GZ250 backfires at shutdown

Hi. I'm new to this forum and motorcycles in general. I've had my 2006 gz250 for about a month and got it when it only had 161 miles on it. Anyway, I took it out today and it backfired whenever I shut it down. This hasn't happened before and I was wondering what could be happening. Any ideas?

What exactly do you mean by "shut it down" ??
Is that turning the engine OFF......or just closing the throttle and coasting ??

If only when turning OFF, then it's probably nothing to worry about .........unless it persists beyond a week or so.

Either way, it probably is a small leak.....either one of the boots on either side of the carb.....or the air cleaner is not mounted securely.....or a small exhaust leak where the pipes meet the engine.

I think I'd ride a bit more, at least through a tank of gas before chasing the cause.

Sometimes it's as simple as too high an idle speed. You cut ignition and the engine spins so many times that it pumps fuel back to the hot exhaust.

I don't understand it when this happens.
He's only been on once; posted a question and then never came back; didn't show up on the GZ250 site either.
