Suzuki GS500 Engine Model Year Based on Numbers of Engine?

I am in the process of purchasing a GS500 from a guy who built it from the frame up. He is not sure the model year of the engine he used, but the numbers on the engine are M501-139XX. Does anyone know the model year with which those numbers coincide?

Try to identify the year by matching the engine cases and cylinder colors (if the engine hasn't been painted).
