About 2 weeks ago, my mare got a very bad cut on her fetlock as a result of snowmobilers accidentally taking down our fence. She cut an artery and nicked a tendon, and miraculously she is sound on it and there is no heat or swelling. The vet sutured the wound and we've got the mare on antibiotics. I've been cleaning and bandaging the wound every day, but there is some crusty buildup along the pastern and it's been tough to keep the area clean. I scrubbed it with betadine surgical scrub, and that did help remove some of the crusties, but the skin underneath is a little soggy. Have any of you experienced something similar, or know a good way to keep the wound & surrounding area crust-free, and dry?
Of course I'm going to call my vet tomorrow and ask her opinion, but I'd like to hear some of your opinions as well.
