Surviving Bike Messenger work in the Big APple?

Ok I have already worked 3 years in the Big apple doing Foot Messenger work, the problem is it doesn't pay enough. So I am going to Bike Messenger. IT looks pretty dangerous, how do I survive.

Please don't reply unless you are a New Yorker(Must ride your bike in the city) or you are a bike messenger or have been one.
