Well my wife had surgery on Dec 12 and all the test said wait this is what the Radiologist said the films x-rays, cat scan, Mri said. He said that she had a broad base bulging disk into the nerve canal at the L-5 S-1. All these films were read from May up till Nov.. She was being put on pain-meRAB for this and sent on. Well in Nov. she was cleaning house and something poped in her back and then the pain was so intense that it made her sick. Well she went to the Hospital and we told them what the x-rays said and they just shot her up with medication and sent her home.
We'll we finally got to see the nurosergon and brought all the films with us and he discovered that she had split her L-5 in 3 spots and showed us on the cat scan but it did not show any leakage from the disk. This just really made me mad that that the radiologist did not see this. He stated to us that you have two choices live with the pain and take a chance of being parlized with the wrong twist or movement or we can do surgery. Not much of a choice.
She did surgery 10 days later on the 12th of Dec. 3 hours later he came and talked to and told me that it was worst that what was shown on the films. He stated that the disc was totaly herniated or rupsured (spelling) and that one part of the verteba had come loose and compressed the nerve going to her right leg( which she has been having right leg pain and nubness). To this day I still don't know what all was done but will find out on the 27 when she goes and get the 29 stapels out of her back. So the surgery was a lot more intense than expected.
She is doing fine at home and walking around but can't bend over or twist and ocastional has pain in her right and left leg but it is not constance like before. So we will wait for the 27th to see how everything is going.
Update: Well the surgery lasted 4 hr. The L-5 was cracked and seperated in three places and one of the bones put pressure on the nerve canal and pinched the nerve going to her right leg. They put several screws into these two vertabra to get all the bones back togeather. To fined out the l5-s1 disc was herniated pretty bad. And they ended up putting a cage around all this. Well she was recovering well for the first 6 months and now she is having problems. She went to see the nerosur. and he stated that it is not healing linning up and kept her out of work til sept. and he stated it could be longer. She has been having alot of pain and can not bend or twist and takes vicotine constantly. She is just in pain and will not let her go back to work.
If anybody has been through this let me know what the out come has been and any sugestion on healing time. Just to let yall know my wife is a General Manager of a Resturant and will she be able to return to here work or does she need to go to school for something else.
