Hi all.. Im back after my visit to the consultant. He has advised me to have on operation to remove a part of my disc which is floating around:confused: He has given me 2 weeks to decide if i want it... Not sure what to do. Please advise. Will this increase the pain?? He told me it will help with the pain in the leg but not that back.. just not sure what to do..

Floating around? Then you don't need discectomy? If part of disc is "floating" around it does not have physical connection to origin of disc.

Please double check what are you writing, then when you confirm I will give you honest advice.

I just had the microdiscectomy on L4/5 on Friday. So far so good. You can read my thread of post-op updates. I tried other conservative methoRAB to relive pain before deciding to have the surgery. It would be wise to exhaust those efforts first before making a decision as big as this. My neurosurgeon did mention that most (not all) herniations may be disconnected and "floating". But I am not sure if an MRI can show it. Also research, research, research. There is so much information on this procedure on the web. Youtube has some good videos describing what they do. How long have you had the pain, where is the pain, what other methoRAB have you tried? What are you symtoms?

Hi thanks for your reply. I have had scaitica for about 6 yrs. I was only having 1 attack ayear up until 2 yr ago. In the last year i have had 5 episodes, the last one in sept 09 left me in traction for 6 weeks and on crutches!!! I still have no feeling in my left foot. At that time i was still under the physio id had a bad attack in July 09...but this was no were as bad as the sept one. My gp referred me for a mri scan and these were the findings:
Midline and left sided disc extrusion L5/S1 with left S1 root compression.
